In the image, Rain or Shine, joy is found in the details. We live in such a fast-paced world. We sometimes forget to stop and notice the small details that are there to make us smile. In this photograph, there are a few winks to the observer. They are easy to find if one takes the time to look beyond the main image. At first glance, one might only notice the weathered pump jack. It has abundant color and is an interesting focus of the piece. However, my favorite elements of this picture are the playful little details. Because with a closer look, one will notice the small brick lying casually in the bottom corner of the picture. Though an odd object in the oil field, it still proudly sits beneath the golden rays of the sun, declaring its small, yet delightful presence.
Then there are two content birds singing to each other sitting on top of the pump jack. As the birds perch, comfortably along for the ride, they bring a sense of familiarity and peace to the photo. Finally, as I continue to take in the essence of the photo, I’m able to take an easy breath; feeling relaxed and serene. The Pump Jack, relentlessly plugging away come, Rain or Shine. In the distance, buttery clouds pour plentiful raindrops over the vast land, bringing a sense of renewal, rejuvenation, and replenishment. Rain always brings the promise of revival and hope for growth, washing away the old and bringing in the new and flourishing.
